Canvas Updates for Summer 2026

New Tools and Features

Accessibility Checker: The Course Accessibility Checker helps instructors to find, fix, and validate accessibility issues in their course content. Learn more in the Canvas guides: How do I use the Accessibility Checker in Canvas?

Captions and Transcripts for Canvas Media: If you create a video using the Record Media feature or upload a video directly to the Rich Content Editor, you can now request captions and transcripts. Learn more about requesting and managing automated captions for Canvas media.

  • Note that captions will not be automatically applied to videos uploaded to or created in the Canvas RCE; they must be requested. For this reason, we recommend using Kaltura (My Media) to upload or create video in Canvas. Kaltura automatically creates captions and transcripts for all videos by default.

Customizable Learner Dashboard: Students now have the option to use a personalized dashboard in Canvas with widgets that track progress. Learn more about the new Student Dashboard.

Discussion Checkpoints: Enhancements to the Discussion tool in Canvas now allow an instructor to require multiple posts in a given discussion topic and give those posts individual due dates and grades. (To learn more, see the Instructure FAQ on Discussion Checkpoints and the Canvas guide on creating graded discussions.)

Enhanced Rubrics: Rubrics in Canvas have been redesigned with a more modern, intuitive interface and new functionality. See an overview of what's new and improved and learn how to manage Enhanced Rubrics.

New Feature Options

These tools and features are not on for all courses by default, but instructors are welcome to activate them for their course sites. Here's how to turn on Feature Options in a course site.

IgniteAI Accessibility Remediation for Courses: The Accessibility Checker (described above in New Tools and Features) has an optional component that is AI-enabled. This feature uses generative AI to help instructors create descriptive alt text for images.

What's Not Available — and Why

IgniteAI tools: In late 2025, Canvas rolled out several tools that use generative AI to translate and create content. With the exception of IgniteAI Search and the Ignite AI Accessibility Remediation feature of the Accessibility Checker (described above), we are disabling these tools until we have the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate them. If you have interest in or questions about generative AI tools for teaching, reach out to [email protected].
