How to Create a Rumi Assignment
Rumi is a writing tool that discourages AI misuse and gives faculty transparency into students ethical use of AI. This guide will walk you through creating a Rumi assignment in Canvas.
Enter Canvas assignment details
Enter a name and description for the assignment. Set the points, assignment group, and display grades options as usual.
Under "Submission Type" choose "External Tool" and then click "Find"
Select "Rumi Assignment LTI" from the list
[Optional] Click "Load This Tool In A New Tab"
Leave "Submission Attempts" set to "Unlimited"
This allows Rumi to control the number of submission attempts.
Click "Load the Assignment In a New Window"
Click on "Settings" (Gear Icon)
By default you will be on the "Assignment Insights" page. Student essays will appear here when they have been submitted. Choose "Settings" to finish configuring your assignment.
NOTE: Rumi's AI feedback assistant creates and applies a rubric to your students' work. Tufts have not yet assessed the accuracy and usefulness of this tool; use at your own discretion.

Configure the "AI Policy" settings to control student AI access
With these settings you can allow (or not allow) students to interact with AI models while writing in Rumi, and you can review these interactions while grading. There are multiple levels of AI interaction you can allow. Choose from the following options:
- NO AI interactions - Leave all of the AI policy boxes unchecked.
- Limit AI interactions - Choose "Set Custom AI Prompts." These settings will restrict student AI access to a limited number of prompts that you have preselected such as "Give Feedback on Grammar."
- Allow students to chat with AI - Check the 'Allow Free Form AI Prompts' to allow the students to have full access to any of the AI's that Rumi has integrated. In this setting, students can chat with the AI similar to how they interact on the chat-GPT website.
- Allow students to get AI Feedback - Tufts University has not verified the AI rubric's accuracy or usefulness. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have questions.
Roll over the "i" icon to learn more about each option.
If allowing AI prompts, review or customize the "AI Prompt Set"
The "AI Prompt Set" is a curated list of prompts students can use while writing in Rumi. If you have selected the "Set Custom AI Prompt Set" it is important to review the AI prompts available to students while they are writing. Students may assume the enabled prompts are allowed under your AI use policy.
Students will highlight text in their writing and then choose from the list of prompts that you have approved or created. Example prompts include "Fix Grammar and Spelling" or "Improve Clarity."
Instructors can choose from 3 pre-created prompt sets or create their own. To preview the pre-created sets just roll over them in the drop down. To create your own, open the "Prompt Set Builder."
Check "Access to Draft history"
This allows students to see their writing history similar to how faculty see it. ETS recommends allowing students to see the draft history so they have transparency into how Rumi is recording their writing.

If you are interested in the Continuation Assignment or Peer-Review features during the pilot please reach out to [email protected].
- A Continuation Assignment facilitates a multi-part assignment where students will continue to revise the essay with multiple rounds of feedback and grading. If you are interested in this approach, create the first assignment as normal, then choose "continuation assignment" for subsequent rounds. You will be prompted to select the previous assignment in the students workflow at that time.
- Group Assignment - This feature is currently in beta.
- Instructor Review Type - "Post-Submission Review" is the typical approach to assessing papers. If you, as the instructor, want ongoing access to the student work in progress, choose "Pre-submision Review".
-
Peer Review - Choose "Full Access Review" to automatically assign students a fellow student's paper to comment on.
