How to Create a Rumi Assignment
Rumi is a writing tool that discourages AI misuse and gives faculty transparency into students ethical use of AI. This guide will walk you through creating a Rumi assignment in Canvas.
Click on "Assignments" in Canvas then click "+ Assignment"
Enter Canvas assignment details
Enter a name and description for the assignment. Set the points, assignment group, and display grades options as usual.
Under "Submission Type" choose "External Tool" and then click "Find"
Select "Rumi Assignment LTI" from the list
[Recomended] Click "Load This Tool In A New Tab"
Leave "Submission Attempts" set to "Unlimited"
This allows Rumi to control the number of submission attempts.
Click "Load the Assignment In a New Window"
The Default settings in Rumi create a individual essay with all AI features disabled. Review the Feedback Release and AI Policy to ensure that they conform to your intended use.
Click Feedback Release
Select Automatic or Manual Release
When manual release is OFF (the default) you students will see your feedback immediately. Studnets can see their feedback regardless of the "post grade" settings in the Canvas gradebook. Turn ON manual release if you would prefer to give feedback on all your students work and then release it to everyong all at once.
NOTE: if you want students grades to be released at the same time you must 'Post the grades' in the canvas grade book at the same time.
Turn on email notifications if you want students to receive an email in addition to any Canvas notifications they are already receiving (not recommended).
Choose AI Policy
Rumi has a number of AI features that can be used to improve students writing or enhance studnets AI litteracy. Everything that the students do with the Rumi AI is fully transparent to instructor.
If you are not sure how to get started with the Rumi AI featurs, ETS recommends the pre created prompts in 'Guided AI' and/or the basic 'Conversational AI' as the first steps.
Guided AI
Guided AI allows students to ask the AI specific prompts that have been pre-approved by you. This curated list of prompts is called an "AI Prompt Set." Students may assume the enabled prompts are allowed under your AI use policy.
Students will highlight text and then choose from the list of prompts that you have approved. Example prompts include "Fix Grammar and Spelling" or "Improve Clarity." Some AI prompts allow the students to instruct the AI to rewrite the students texts (these are labeled "Rewrite text) while others will only make suggestions ( these prompts are labeled feedback only).
Instructors can choose from 7 pre-created prompt sets or create their own. ETS recommends the 'Draft Polish" (for grammarly like features)or "Writing Feedback" (for an AI experience that will only suggest edits).

Conversational AI
This feature allows students to Chat with AI just as you might on the ChatGPT website. The big difference is that the faculty can see the full conversation history and the AI is fully aware fo the studnets essay so far.

AI Rubric Feedback
Rumi's AI feedback applies a rubric to your students' work. Tufts has not yet assessed the accuracy and usefulness of this tool; use at your own discretion.

Choose additional settings
Template : This allows you to Pre-fill all student documents with template content. For example a worksheet or lab report format.
Multipart Assignment: This facilitates an assignment where students continue to revise the essay with multiple rounds of feedback and grading. If you are interested in this approach, create the first assignment as normal, then choose "continuation assignment" for subsequent rounds.
