What is the Hypothesis Collaborative Annotation Tool?
Hypothesis is a digital annotation tool that enables students to annotate and respond to text using different media and empowers them to collaborate on understanding and developing ideas about their readings. Using Hypothesis, students can collaboratively annotate any file or website.

Adding Hypothes.is activities to your Canvas course
Before setting up a Hypothesis assignment you must add your content to your Canvas Files or Pages. PDFs must be OCR readable to allow the text to be selectable for annotations. See guide here to update your PDFs.

1. URL - You can add a website for students to annotate. Websites are live so if changes are made to the website that will be reflected in the hypothesis assignment. NOTE: Students cannot access anything behind a paywall or that requires them to login. ex: NY Times article that requires student authentication.
2. Canvas Page: You can curate text and images using a canvas page to have the students annotate.
3. JSTOR Article
4. Youtube - You can input a youtube link. NOTE: Students do not annotate the video, they annotate the transcript which will play side by side with the video. Please ensure the video has good captions before using it for a hypothesis assignment.
5. Canvas File: Files must already be in the canvas files section before they can be added to a hypothesis assignment.
6. Google Drive: Connect to your google drive account to access files.
7. OneDrive: Connect to your OneDrive account to access files.
Click Select to choose your file

Select your group set
It is recommend that students annotate with groups of about 10-12 students depending on the length of the document. We highly encourage the use of groups to keep annotations engaging but not overwhelming. Groups are created within the Canvas People tool. See guide here to create Canvas Group Sets.
