LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor user guide for Instructors
LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are two proctoring tools you can use in Canvas to lock down a student's computer environment and monitor their activities during a Canvas quiz.
LockDown Browser can be used both in a classroom setting or when students are remote. It prevents students from opening other apps, browsers, etc, when they are taking a New Quiz or Classic Quiz in Canvas. Settings are customizable. It can be used on its own, or in combination with Respondus Monitor.
Respondus Monitor is only used when LockDown Browser is also being used. It monitors and records a student's webcam and screen and provides a basic analysis of the recording, flagging events which need review. It's designed for use when students are not in a classroom. Settings are customizable.

Setting Up
It's important that you set up LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor correctly in the course in Canvas, and that you share the correct instructions and the Tufts-specific download link with students in the course.
For support with this please contact Tufts Educational Technology Services staff at [email protected]
Once LockDown Browser has been added to your course, you will find all the guides and resources you need by clicking "LockDown Browser" in the white menu on the left side in the Canvas course.
Be sure to watch and read through:
- the "Introductory Video"
- the "Getting started with Respondus Monitor" video
- the "Getting Started" materials
- the "Video Tutorials"
- the "Guides & Supports"
- the "Information about proctoring results"
Note that the LockDown Browser item in the Canvas course menu is only visible to you as the instructor, not to your students.
New Quizzes vs Classic Quizzes
LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor can be used in Canvas with both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes, however there's a slight advantage to using these tools with New Quizzes. When a student clicks on a quiz title which has been set up with LockDown Browser, if it's a New Quiz, the LockDown Browser app will launch automatically, whereas if it's a Classic Quiz the student will have to manually launch the LockDown Browser app.
Either way the quiz and the Respondus tools will work the same. It's just slightly more convenient for the student with New Quizzes. So, if you are building quizzes from scratch or from question banks, consider using the New Quizzes tool in Canvas.
Practice Quiz
The most important thing you can do to prepare your students for successful use of LockDown Browser is to give them an ungraded practice quiz in Canvas with LockDown Browser the week before the first actual test.
This will allow them to correctly download the app and use it for the first time. Once they've done that they won't need to download it again.
To set up a practice quiz, log into your course in Canvas, click the LockDown Browser link, and review the resources in the "Getting Started" tab, under "Create a practice quiz".
