LockDown Browser User Guide for Instructors

LockDown Browser is a proctoring tool you can use in Canvas to lock down a student's computer environment and monitor their activities during a Canvas quiz. It is made by the company Respondus.

LockDown Browser prevents students from opening other apps, browsers, etc, when they are taking a New Quiz or Classic Quiz in Canvas. It can be used either in a classroom or when students are remote. Settings are customizable. It can be used on its own, or in combination with Respondus Monitor.

Respondus Monitor is an additional feature that records a student's webcam and screen and provides a basic analysis of the recording, flagging events which need review. It's designed for use when students are remote, i.e. not in a classroom. Settings are customizable.

Note that the LockDown Browser item in the Canvas course menu is only visible to instructors, not to students.

Add student-facing Instructions in the course in Canvas

It's important that you provide students with the correct LockDown Browser instructions in the course in Canvas.

To do this:

  • Create a Page in the course titled "LockDown Browser Instructions"
  • Choose from one of these instruction sets
  • Copy all the text in the relevant blue box
  • Paste the text into the Page in Canvas
  • Add the Page to the Canvas module(s) right before the practice exam and actual exams

New Quizzes vs Classic Quizzes

In Canvas LockDown Browser can be used with either New Quizzes or Classic Quizzes, however there's a slight advantage to using these tools with New Quizzes.  If it's a New Quiz the LockDown Browser app will launch automatically when the student clicks the quiz title, whereas if it's a Classic Quiz the student will have to manually launch the LockDown Browser app.

So, if you are building quizzes from scratch or from question banks, consider using the New Quizzes tool in Canvas. See: How do I create a quiz using New Quizzes?

Also, it's very easy to migrate a quiz from the Classic Quizzes to the New Quizzes format. See: How do I migrate an exam from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes in Canvas?

Practice Quiz

The most important thing you can do to prepare your students for successful use of LockDown Browser is to give them an ungraded practice quiz in Canvas with LockDown Browser the week before the first actual test.

This will allow them to correctly download the app and use it for the first time. Once they've done that they won't need to download it again.

To set up a practice quiz, log into your course in Canvas, click the LockDown Browser link, and review the resources in the "Getting Started" tab, under "Create a practice quiz".
