How do I migrate a Classic Canvas quiz to New Quizzes?

Instructors can migrate a quiz from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes.

Instructors can also migrate a survey from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes. However, the survey will be migrated as a standard quiz, because New Quizzes does not include a survey feature.

While New Quizzes migration supports all question types, you should still review your assessments before assigning them to students.

IMPORTANT QUIZ MIGRATION NOTES:

  • When a Classic Quiz is migrated to New Quizzes, question groups will be imported as Item Bank questions. However, the questions in the question groups will be stored in the quiz and will not be added as a freestanding Item Bank. All quiz questions in the group will be displayed in the quiz preview.
  • After migration to New Quizzes, multiple dropdown questions will change and be shown as matching questions.
  • Question Banks cannot currently be imported into New Quizzes as Item Banks.

Go to Quizzes and find the title of the quiz you want to migrate.

To the right of the title click the Options icon (3 vertical dots).

Choose "Migrate" from the dropdown menu.

Once migrated, a copy of the quiz (now in New Quizzes format) will be listed in the Quizzes tool. By default, migrated quizzes are unpublished.

NOTE: After migrating a quiz, you may get an email from Canvas noting that you have exported a course (even though you have only migrated a quiz).

To edit the details of the migrated quiz (Name / Total Points / Assignment Group / Attempts / Assign / Due / Available / Until Dates), click the Options icon (3 vertical dots) and select Edit

To view and edit the quiz questions, click on Options icon and select Build
