Which Verity settings should I use?

There are many settings to choose from when configuring proctoring with Verity. Below are a list of recommended and optional settings. You can access these tools when you are editing a Canvas quiz in the "Verity Options" window.

To get to the "Verity Options" window see: How do I add Verity proctoring to a quiz in Canvas?

For Proctored Methods choose "Lockdown App"

  • Lockdown App - requires a student to use a special browser called the Verity Lockdown App when taking the exam in Canvas. Settings for this browser are used to manage various aspects of students' exam-taking experience, as described below.

Note: we strongly recommend the Lockdown App method (rather than the Browser Extension method) as it is more flexible and effective as a proctoring tool.

Click "I Understand" to confirm and continue choosing Verity settings

When making choices in the Verity Options window, click an item to select it (it will turn purple), click "i" to learn more, and click "..." to add additional conditions

  1. Record Video - to record the student's webcam
  2. Record Audio - to record the student's audio if they're taking the exam remotely (don't use this setting for in-classroom exams)
  3. Record Screen - to record the student's screen
  4. Record Keyboard - to record what the student types (only use this if there will be moderate amounts of typed text in the exam)
  5. Record Clipboard - to record what the student copies and pastes

Optional Recording Activity settings:

  • Room Scan - will prompt students to record a 360° scan of the environment in which they're taking the test.

Setting not needed:

  • Record Web Traffic - is not in use with the Lockdown Browser app

Disable Features - all settings are optional

  1. Disable New Tabs - prevents the student from opening new tabs in the Verity Lockdown browser app
  2. Close Open Tabs - closes any extra tabs that are open in the browser when the exam is launched
  3. Disable Clipboard - prevents the student from copying to or pasting from the clipboard
  4. Disable File Download - prevents the student from downloading files
  5. Disable Spellcheck - prevents the student from using the browser's spellcheck feature
  1. Only One Screen - requires the student to unplug any additional monitors
  2. Block Virtual Machines - prevents the student from taking an exam within a virtual machine
  3. Hide Other Windows - prevents the student from seeing any other window besides the Verity Lockdown window

Optional Restrict Device setting:

  • Block Applications - choose from a list of applications to that will be "blocked" during the test. Students must close blocked applications prior to starting the test and will be unable to open blocked applications during the exam.

Authenticate Identity - optional setting

ID Verification - requires student to show some form of ID which is evaluated to see if it matches their face on the webcam. This setting is optional and not needed for small classes.

  1. Recording Panel - includes a movable panel the student can use to access tech support during the exam. We recommend that this panel always be enabled.

Optional settings:

  • Enable Calculator - allows students to access a scientific calculator in the Recording Panel
  • Enable Whiteboard - allows students to access a whiteboard tool in the Recording Panel.  NOTE: with this tool the student can upload and view any image. from their computer, so this feature is only recommended for open-book or low-stakes exams.

AI Video Analysis - optional settings

  • Exactly One Student - checks to see if more than one person is in the webcam frame throughout the duration of the exam
  • Suspicious Objects - checks to see if the student has picked up a phone, book, or other object at any point during the exam

These AI video analysis settings are not useful for in-class proctored exams, but may be useful when students are taking an exam remotely.

However, the AI detection software is evolving and may not accurately detect the number of people in the frame or whether or not "suspicious objects" are visible in the frame.

We recommend that you consider these features as experimental.

Exemptions - optional setting

Use this feature to include the names of students exempt from proctoring with Verity or who require special testing circumstances.

When you are done choosing Verity Options, save your settings profile by clicking "Save as Profile"

Tip: You can "Save as Profile" from any Canvas quiz in any of your courses, and re-apply those settings to any other quiz in any of your courses.
