Students - Reading Lists Help

What is a Reading List?

The Reading Lists tool in Canvas allows you to see all the resources for your courses, such as books, articles, and streaming media, including online resources and physical materials available through the libraries. You can view the list within your Canvas course site.

The library terms "Course Reserves," or "on reserve" refer to material that is set aside at the request of instructors so that it is easily and readily available for students in a particular course. There are generally two types of Reserve items: Physical and Electronic.

Reading Lists put together all your course reserves materials in one list – including library-owned physical materials, links to e-books or articles, links to open-source materials, and more. Some materials can be accessed right from the list, and some you will have to visit a Tufts library to use.

Where can I find the Reading List for my course?

Log in to Canvas and open the course.

Click Reading Lists in the menu in the left column.

This will open a list of materials for your course, which may include readings as well as streaming video and audio.

Your instructor may have organized the list into sections. To collapse the sections and view a list of section names, click the View sections button at the top of the list.

Click the name of a section to expand it and view the list of individual items in that section.

How do I check out (borrow) books, DVDs, and other physical reserve items?

If the item is physically on reserve at one of the Tufts libraries, you will see its availability, library, and call number included in the details under the title. Go to that library and ask for the item at the circulation desk.

Loan periods vary depending on the course. Most reserve items can be borrowed for 4 hours at a time so that everyone in the course has a chance to access them.

If the item does not say available, it may be in use by someone else, or it may not be on the reserve shelf yet. Check the list again later, or contact the library if you have questions.

If the item has a View online link, there is no need to visit the library to access it. See below for instructions.

How do I access e-books, articles, and streaming media (aka online reserves)?

In the Reading List, click the View online link under a citation’s title.

If the item is an e-book, article, or streaming audio/video in the libraries’ collections:

  • A new tab will open prompting you to log in with your Tufts username and password.
  • You’ll then access the material through a library database.
  • Access details vary depending on the database, some may be read-only access, while some may give you the option to download articles and book chapters.
  • Note that some e-books have a limit on the number of users that may access them at one time, which should be noted in the item’s record. Try again later if you are unable to access an e-book due to this limit.

If you encounter an error message when trying to view an online resource, mouse over the title of the item in the Reading List. The Full details button will appear on the right. Click this to open the record.

Under the View online heading, you’ll see a link. Mouse over this and the option Mark as broken will appear on the right.

On the next screen, you’ll have the option to add a comment describing the issue. Click Confirm to send an alert to library staff.

Please note that some e-books have a limit on the number of users that may access them at one time, which should be noted in the item’s record. Please do not mark a link as broken if you get a message about the user limit being reached. Try again later.

Library staff may contact you with follow-up questions, and/or to let you know when the issue is resolved.

How can I find a specific item on the Reading List?

Click the Search icon at the top of the list to search for a specific title, author or keyword.

You’ll see a list of the sections in which results appear. Click a section name to expand it and see the item that matches your search.

To filter the items in your search results by the type of material, such as Article or Video, click the Filter icon and choose an option under the Type heading, then click Apply.

In addition to filtering search results, you can filter the entire list. For example, you can use the Article filter to see all the articles that are in the list for your course.

How can I keep track of what I’ve read?

Click the check mark icon to the left of each title to mark the item as done.

Who can I contact if I need help using Reading Lists?
