How do I add items to the reading list?
These instructions will help with the following:
- Searching the library catalog
- Adding a library item to your Reading List
- After you add a physical item to your Reading List
- After you add an online resource to your Reading List
- The library does not own the material you need
- Open access online resources
- Deleting an item from your Reading List
- Publishing your list – important last step!
To begin adding items to your Reading List, click the +Add button at the top of the list. You’ll see several options under the New item heading.
Search the library
This option opens a search box with the default to Search JumboSearch, which is identical to JumboSearch that you’d access through the library website.
We recommend using JumboSearch because it will show you the most results for physical and online resources.
Enter your search terms or use the dropdown menu or Advanced Search button to further refine your search.
Your results may include a variety of items and material types, including both physical items such as books, scores, and DVDs, and electronic items such as e-books, videos, chapters, and articles, in databases such as JSTOR and Kanopy.
Use the Filter button on the right to narrow your search results by Type, such as Article or Video, and by Availability.
A note about searching for video:
If you are AS&E or SMFA faculty (affiliated with Tisch, Lilly music, or SMFA libraries) and can’t find a streaming version of a film or video you want for your course, you can request it by submitting up to five titles per course using the Tisch Streaming Media form. For larger requests, email [email protected].
If a streaming version is not available, your library can place a DVD copy on reserve, or you can schedule an in-person screening. Please reach out to your library with any questions, or see our streaming media FAQ for more information.
Adding a library item
When you find an item you want to add, you have two options for adding it to your list.
Option 1: Hover over the title and click on the Drag and drop to list button on the left. You can then drag the citation into your list and “drop” it anywhere you’d like (at the top or bottom of your list or into any spot or section in between.)
Option 2: Click the + button on the right.
This option opens a form below the item to select which section you want to add the item to, and gives you options to add it to your Suggestions or Favorites.
The item will appear at the bottom of the section you added it to. To reorder items after you add them, see the instructions for organizing items within sections (scroll to the end of the page).
After you add a physical item to your Reading List
Note that items are not automatically placed on reserve at this point!
- The library will be alerted that you want this item on reserve, and staff will retrieve it from the shelves or recall it if necessary
- You can monitor the item’s status in your Reading List. When the “Library processing” or other status disappears, the item is complete

If the library does not own the material you need
Click +Add and choose Manual entry.
Enter as much information as you have into the form. Note that Type is a required field. Choose the format of the material (e.g. Book, E-book, Video) from the dropdown menu.
The library will attempt to purchase this item for our collection. Library staff will contact you if more information is needed to complete this request.
Open access online resources
You can include links to online resources outside the library catalog, such as websites and no-cost course materials and open educational resources.
Click +Add and choose Manual entry from the dropdown menu.
Select the appropriate option from the Type menu, such as Website or E-book.
Enter a title and click Next.
Fill out the form by pasting the resource link into the URL field, and entering any other relevant information.
Click Next and complete the final screen to select the section where the resource will appear. Click Add.
Delete an item
To remove an item from your list, open the Item menu on the right.
Choose Delete item.
Publishing your list
When you create your Reading List, you’ll see a banner across the top informing you that your list hasn’t been sent to the library and isn’t visible to students.
When you are ready to send your list to the library for processing, click the “My list is ready” button in the banner. You’ll receive a confirmation message that the list has been published and library staff have been alerted that your list is ready.
You can continue adding items to your list after you send it to the library. The library will automatically be alerted when each item is added.
