End of the Semester options for Instructors
Instructors have 3 options at the end of the semester regarding their Canvas course site.
1- Take no action
2- Allow students “Read-Only” access to the course site
3- Prevent students from viewing or accessing the course site
Below are details and directions for each option
Option 1 - Take no action
By default, students continue to have access to any Canvas course site on which they have an account after the semester term ends. If the instructor takes no action, students will continue to:
- Access the site via their Dashboard class card
- View all published content
- Participate in published Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes (if still open)
- View grades and feedback
Option 2 - Allow students “Read-Only” access to the course site
-Go to Settings and click the Course Details tab.
-Under Participation, select "Course"
-Enter a "Start" and "End" date/time and checkmark
-Click “Update Course Details”
With these settings students can:
- Access the site via their Courses / All Courses page
- View all published content
- View grades and feedback
Students can view published Assignments, Discussions and Quizzes, but cannot submit or participate in these activities.
Option 3- Prevent students from viewing or accessing the course site
-Go to Settings and click the Course Details tab.
-Under Participation, select "Course"
-In the “End” box enter a date/time for when you want the students to no longer have access to the site.
-Checkmark “Restrict students from viewing course after end date”
-Click “Update Course Details”
With these settings students cannot access or view the course site.
If you want to limit or turn off access to your course site but you have one or two students who need to submit late work or access site resources, see Setting course site access for individual students.
