What's changing about Turnitin?

As of August 2025, Canvas offers a new way to integrate Turnitin’s plagiarism detection tools into your course assignments: the Canvas Plagiarism Framework (CPF).

What is the Canvas Plagiarism Framework (CPF)?

The Canvas Plagiarism Framework is a built-in integration that allows instructors to use Turnitin’s plagiarism detection directly within a standard Canvas assignment. It’s designed to work seamlessly with Canvas features like SpeedGrader, rubrics, and group assignments.

Key Features:

  • Uses the Canvas assignment interface
  • Supports SpeedGrader, Canvas rubrics, and multiple due dates
  • Students submit through the standard Canvas submission workflow
  • Originality reports are available within Canvas
  • Supports group assignments and multiple file uploads

Can I continue to use the Turnitin external tool?

If you used Turnitin in Canvas previously, you are familiar with the Turnitin external tool (also called the Legacy Turnitin tool). If you prefer, you can continue to use the Legacy Turnitin tool, and any Turnitin assignments imported from an older course site will still be set up to use this version of Turnitin.

However, we recommend using the new Turnitin CPF integration for new assignments. It offers several advantages over the Legacy Turnitin tool, such as the ability to use Canvas rubrics and group assignments, and works more seamlessly with Assignment due dates.
