Canvas Updates for Spring 2026

New Tools and Features

Canvas Portfolios: A new ePortfolio tool is available for all Canvas users. You can find more information and an overview video on the Canvas Product Blog. The current ePortfolio tool will be retired in June 2026; stay tuned for information about how to transition portfolio content.

Surveys in New Quizzes: New Quizzes now has a "Survey" quiz type. Instructors can use a Survey to collect anonymous or non-anonymous feedback, with graded or ungraded options, and survey data is available in the Reports tab of the New Quizzes tool. Learn more about Surveys in the Canvas Guides.

Performance and Usability Improvements to SpeedGrader: The updated version of SpeedGrader is mostly a back-end improvement that will result in faster load times and better performance for large classes. Users will also see some small changes to the interface, including clearer menus and alerts. Learn more about SpeedGrader changes in the Canvas Guides.

New Feature Options

These tools and features are not on for all courses by default, but instructors are welcome to activate them for their course sites. Here's how to turn on Feature Options in a course site.

Enhanced Rubrics: Rubrics in Canvas have been redesigned with a more modern, intuitive interface and new functionality.  See an overview of what's new and improved and learn how to manage Enhanced Rubrics.

Security Updates

User Generated Token Restrictions: The creation of User Generated Access Tokens is now restricted to Teachers, TAs, Designers, and Admins.

What's Not Available — and Why

Discussion Checkpoints Feature Preview: Enhancements to the Discussion tool in Canvas now allow an instructor to require multiple posts in a given discussion topic and give those posts individual due dates and grades. (See the Instructure FAQ on Discussion Checkpoints.) A small number of courses at Tufts are trialing this new feature. However, it still has several known issues and limitations, primarily related to grading. We hope that these issues will be resolved in the first half of 2026 and we are tentatively planning to make the tool more widely available this summer.

IgniteAI tools: In late 2025, Canvas rolled out several tools that use generative AI to translate and create content. With the exception of IgniteAI Search, we are disabling these tools until we have the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate them. If you have interest in or questions about generative AI tools for teaching, reach out to [email protected].
