IgniteAI Accessibility Remediation for Courses: The Accessibility Checker now includes a feature that uses generative AI to help instructors create descriptive alt text for images and tables. Use of the feature is optional; Teachers can still use the Accessibility Checker and remediate issues without using alt text generation. Assignment Enhancements: This feature option is an update to the Assignment Details page that changes the assignment interface and submission workflow for students. To see the new interface, enable the option and use Student View to submit to an assignment. Learn more about Assignment Enhancements in the Canvas Guides.

Enhanced Peer Review Allocation and Grading: The new Peer Review engine includes two major components: the ability to assign points and due dates to reviews and an improved, dynamic distribution of reviews and reviewers. Learn more and see a video overview in the release notes. (In order to use this feature, you must also enable the Assignment Enhancements feature option and ensure that the Enhanced Rubrics and Performance Upgrades for SpeedGrader are toggled on.)

The new Peer Review engine changes the workflow for Teachers dramatically, and it cannot be rolled back easily once used in an assignment. We encourage you to review the Instructure FAQ document and reach out to [email protected] if you would like assistance with the initial setup.

IgniteAI Summaries for Discussions: Teachers, TAs, and Designers can generate quick summaries of the main points, questions, and ideas in a discussion thread. Discussion summaries are not visible to students. Learn more about Summaries for Discussions in the Canvas Guides.

IgniteAI Question Authoring Assistance for Quizzes: When building a new quiz, Teachers, TAs, and Designers can generate potential quiz questions based on course content.  Learn more about Question Authoring Assistance in the Canvas Guides.

API token expiration: As of the July 22 Canvas deploy, all API tokens belonging to instructors have a mandatory expiration date of 90 days. Tokens belonging to students have an expiration date of 30 days.

IgniteAI tools: In late 2025, Canvas rolled out several tools that use generative AI to translate and create content. With the exception of IgniteAI Search and the Ignite AI Accessibility Remediation feature of the Accessibility Checker (described above), we are disabling some of these tools until we have the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate them. Others are available as feature options; they are disabled by default but instructors can choose to enable them for individual course sites.
