How do I request scanning for course reserves?

Tufts Libraries are now offering a service to digitize portions of our print collection for use in course reserves. Scanned materials are uploaded to the Reading List section of your Canvas course site, where they can easily be accessed by your students. This allows us to limit downloads and discourage sharing of scanned materials beyond enrolled students.

  • Before we scan from items in our print collection, we will first check to see if an ebook version is available for the library to purchase. Whenever possible, we will license the ebook version before scanning.
  • Digitization can only be requested on items that are only held by Tufts in print format. Digitization requests on titles also held in electronic format will be automatically rejected.
  • Copyright guidelines allow us to scan no more than 10-20% of the total book, or 1-2 chapters — whichever comes first. This limit may vary by managing library, and it is at the discretion of library staff to cancel any request that they determine does not meet copyright guidelines.

Turnaround Time

  • Because of high demand, the turnaround time for digitization reserves requests can be up to two weeks. Please submit your requests as early as possible to ensure that they are ready for the start of the semester.
